Dogs & Doos’ Loveable Pack

UNIQUELY CARING AND LOVING EACH AND EVERY ONE OF OUR PETS

Dogs & Doos has cared for so many wonderful characters over the years with a variety of needs, encouraging all animals to be individuals. Please take the time to get to know a few of our distinctive pack members.

Special note to our existing furry family members: it was difficult to choose which pooch to highlight, the following are by no means our only favourites.

Bailey

Pack member since: 2011
Breed:
Golden Retriever
Likes: Loves life to the fullest, Bailey is very easy to please. Top of his list of things to do is going to the beach

Bailey has been part of our lives since he was six months old. His owners chose to not have him desexed and although there is a belief that sterilised dogs are aggressive, Bailey is such a pacifier.

We don’t judge dogs based on their assets or particular breed as they are all so individual. In fact, Bailey is often paired with other dogs to introduce them to a pack.

Jack and Belle (Basenjis)

Pack member since: 2011-2015
Breed:
Basenji
Likes: Both had a preference for beautiful sunny days (don’t we all!)

Jack aged four, and Belle aged twelve, were part of our pack until they moved overseas with their owners Toni and Simon.

Jack and Belle were quite fearful of the rain, in fact they refused to go out in it. We always had to time our walks for good weather or else we would entertain them indoors.

Both dogs had epilepsy and due to the severity of their seizures, they had quite a lot of medication that needed to be administered. We strictly followed their treatment plan, ensuring they were healthy and happy in our care.

Jack didn’t socialise well with other dogs, so we overcame that problem by having him ride shotgun in the front of the van. You couldn’t pat him as he’d bite you, so we used strategies to let him think everything was on his own terms. These techniques proved successful as he was quite affectionate with us.

Dino

Pack member since: 2015
Breed:
Malamute cross Husky
Likes: Adventurous soul with an abundance of energy

Henrique and Danielle’s six-year-old pooch Dino did not socialise well initially with the rest of the group. When we’d go to dog parks with wide open spaces, we kept him on a lead to prevent him from wandering off on a solo mission.

Once we realised that his behaviour was out of boredom, we adjusted his sessions to include more bush, scrub and trees to fossick through and provide the stimulation he craved.

Dino is one of the first dogs to excitedly jump out of the van when we head out in the wild.

Ellie

Pack member since: 2012
Breed:
Labrador
Likes: Being the Alpha boss lady!

Brett and Charlotte approached Samia with their then two-year-old dog Ellie in 2012. Ellie had severe separation anxiety, she would claw at the doors and jump over baby gates to escape a confined space.

She likes to be in control and although she might not necessarily want to be alpha of the pack, she can’t help herself. Our tactic with her is to take the stress away from her need to be alpha. We accomplish this by anticipating if there are other dogs in the park and monitoring her body language if other dogs’ approach. If she starts showing signs of dominating (hackling and whining) we redirect her with a ball or a treat.

A decade later, Ellie’s anxiety is under control as she feels safe with our pack and our family.

Suffering from leukemia and arthritis, she requires a slower pace and needs naps often. We tend to take her on shorter 15 minute walks, sometimes solo or paired with similar dogs.

Ellie is very loyal and amazing with our son Hadi; she’s very patient and calm around him despite her problems. Her big brown eyes light up and her tail wags in excitement when the Dogs & Doos van turns up at her house. It’s quite endearing to see how far she has come and the trust she places in us.

Jagger

Pack member since: 2017
Breed:
Spoodle
Likes: Treats and catching a ball

Alison’s four-year old Spoodle, Jagger, has been with us since he was a pup. He is very nervous around big dogs and seems to feel safer if we put him on a lead for the first ten minutes of a walk. This gives him time to get comfortable with the environment. When he stops being skittish and his body language changes (ears and tail up), we know he’s ready to go off lead. We give Jagger lots of positive reinforcement by talking to him, being calm and remaining assertive so he knows we have his back, and he can relax.

dexter

Pack member since: 2016
Breed:
Bernese Mountain Dog
Likes: Playing hide and seek with Hadi

Fur parents Samantha and Courtney brought the ever-playful Dexter to us when he was a year old.

Before Dexter was a member of Dogs & Doos, Ahamed would see him every day in the park from when he was just 12 weeks old. His fondness of Ahamed grew when he joined the pack and runs to the van to greet him.

Despite his size, Dexter has a terrific relationship with our young son. He likes to play hide and seek at the park with him, hiding behind trees and jumping out.

Frank

Pack member since: 2009-passed away in 2020
Breed:
Bulldog cross Pug
Liked: To watch Bones and CSI and barks at any animal he saw on TV

Sarah had taken her dog Frank to a daycare centre for years. Abruptly one day he refused to go, to the point where he wouldn’t get out of the car at drop off and would bite her if she tried to coax him. Seeking an alternative solution, she spoke to colleagues at work and was impressed with one of her workmate’s experience with our services so organised a meet and greet.

Frank warmed to us instantly and integrated well with our pack for many years. Our bond with him was so strong that despite us moving 20km away, we continued to make the drive to continue caring for him.

Frank was a bit of a loner; he liked to do his own thing. He’d always want to sit in the front seat of the van and paw Samia for attention. He didn’t like the back of the van and if it was one of those days, he refused to get in and would go to the passenger side door. He was happy in his own skin and Frank liked to do what Frank wanted to do. Sometimes if he didn’t want to leave the park he’d just sit down. As he was too heavy to pick up, it took a treat to get him moving, even after a nap!

His loveable furry face was so well known in our family that even our extended two-legged family took an interest in his well-being, often asking where he was.

Sadly, we lost Frank in 2020 at the ripe old age of 14. We were very privileged to have been a part of his life and to hold Sarah’s hand through the last part of his journey on this earth.
